Meet Rolf, one of the newest additions to Roveg’s transport team, who brings 31 years of driving experience and a lifelong connection to the fruit industry. Although he only joined Roveg in June, he is certainly no stranger to life on the road. We joined him for a day to discover what being a truck driver at Roveg is all about.
Starting the day: Ready to hit the road
Every working day starts with a few important checks. Before heading out, Rolf inspects his truck, checking the tires, lights and technical condition to make sure everything is ready for the journey.
The first assignment of the day comes from the planning team: collecting fresh blueberries from a nearby location. Once everything is checked, it’s time to get behind the wheel and set off.
For Rolf, the truck is more than just a vehicle. It’s his workspace, and he has added a few personal touches to make it feel like his own. Among them is a photograph of his son, which travels with him from one truck to another.
More than just driving
After arriving at the collection point, there are a few things to take care of before loading begins. Safety shoes on, doors unlocked and paperwork completed. Then it’s time to get to work.
Rolf enjoys being involved in the loading process. Spending some time moving around and doing physical work is a welcome change from sitting behind the wheel for most of the day.
Once the pallets are loaded and secured, he checks that the correct temperature is set and completes the necessary paperwork. Everything is ready, and it’s time to head back to Roveg.
Of course, not every day looks the same. Sometimes Rolf collects a full truckload from one location, while on other days he visits several different locations to collect smaller quantities. The assignments depend on the planning, making each working day a little different.
A coffee break and time with colleagues
Back at Roveg, there’s time for a coffee and a quick catch-up with colleagues while the truck is being unloaded and prepared for its next assignment.
Although much of a truck driver’s working day is spent independently, staying connected with the team is still an important part of the job. Rolf enjoys meeting colleagues, having a chat and checking how things are going in the warehouse. And whenever an extra pair of hands is needed, he’s happy to help.
When asked what he thinks about his colleagues, Rolf is quick to say that he enjoys working with the team. Everyone has their own personality and opinions, but mutual respect is what makes working together possible.
31 years behind the wheel: What keeps him going?
After more than three decades in transport, what does Rolf enjoy most about being a truck driver?
For him, the answer is simple: freedom.
As he explains, one of the best things about the job is the independence. Once he receives his assignment, he is responsible for getting the fruit from A to B. He enjoys being on the road, organizing his work independently and having responsibility for his deliveries.
Over the years, Rolf has travelled through many countries, including Belgium, Germany, France, England and Scotland. With so much experience behind him, driving a truck has become second nature.
Life outside the truck
Of course, there’s more to life than work. When he’s not behind the wheel, Rolf enjoys spending time with his family and friends. His weekends are often filled with fishing, cycling or getting together with friends for a board game.
It’s a different pace from life on the road, but one he enjoys just as much.
